“We are planning to increase the country's annual gas output to 1 billion cubic meters from the current 600 million cubic meters,” President Rouhani said, addressing the reporters on the sidelines of the third summit meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Tehran on Monday.
While expressing gratitude to the heads of 17 countries participating in the GEFC Summit meeting, President Rouhani said, Azerbaijan's membership bid as observer was approved by the 17th Ordinary Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) which was held here on Saturday.
“The summit is of special importance and it is the first international meeting after the Vienna nuclear talks and the praiseworthy welcome and presence of nine world leaders in the summit shows that all countries are looking for increasing their communications under the present conditions in the region and the world, especially with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Rouhani said.
Pointing to the importance of gas as a clean fuel, Rouhani said the whole world has paid special attention to the issue of clean fuel and the healthy environment, given that 2015 is the Year of the Environment.
The president stressed that development must be sustainable and that the development not consistent with the environment cannot be sustainable.
He also stressed the need to achieve renewable energy, saying that, “Of course we have a long way to reach the renewable energy with gas industry, and to use gas in the best way.”
He emphasized the benefits of natural gas as a clean and abundant energy source and its potential contribution to global sustainable development.
Recognizing that the rising demand for natural gas driven by population growth, economic growth and environmental considerations, Rouhani called for a focus on the security of demand and supply and the application of stable, reliable and transparent market mechanisms free of politically motivated restrictions and unilateral decisions and interventions.
